چکیده

Systems of argumentation or ’computational dialectic’ are emerging as a powerful means of structuring inter-agent communication in multi-agent systems. Individual systems of computational dialectic have been suggested and implemented to tackle specific problems but no comprehensive and comparative assessment has been made of such systems. This paper introduces ScenarioGC0, a framework for the implementation and testing of a wide range of computational dialectic systems. ScenarioGC0 has a range of benefits for both theoretical and practical work in computational dialectics, including: a means to test arbitrary dialectic systems using a unified knowledge base; a means to determine standard metrics by which dialectic systems can be measured and compared; enabling a body of example dialogue to be assembled for each dialectic system to demonstrate their qualities.

Formal Dialectic Specification

Formal dialectic systems have been suggested as a means to model inter-agent communication in multi-agent systems. The formal dialectic systems of Hamblin are practical models for the computational implementation of such a system of argumentative dialogue. This paper introduces a formal framework for the specification of Hamblintype systems that has a range of benefits for theoretical work in t...

Informalizing Formal Logic

This paper discusses how the basic notions of formal logic can be expressed in terms of argumentation and how formal classical (or deductive) reasoning can be captured as a dialectic argumentation process. Classical propositional logical entailment of a formula is understood via the wining arguments between those supporting the formula and arguments supporting its contradictory or negated formu...

The Logic of Soku in the Kyoto School

‘A is A, and yet A is not A; therefore A is A’.1 This common inference within the logic of soku is based on the dialectical form ‘A soku not-A’, variously translated as ‘A sive not-A’, ‘A qua not-A’, and ‘A and yet not-A’, and is hereafter referred to as the soku dialectic. Nishida Kitarō, Tanabe Hajime, and Nishitani Keiji, the central philosophers of the Kyoto school, grant the legitimacy of ...

What is Dialectic

Karl Popper famously opposed Marxism in general and its philosophical core – the Marxist dialectic – in particular. As a progressive thinker, Popper saw in dialectic a source of dogmatism damaging to philosophy and political theory. Popper had summarized his views on dialectic in an article that was first delivered in 1937 and subsequently republished as a chapter of his book (2002, pp. 419-451...

Dialectic Decision Support Systems: The Design and Evaluation Framework

Many complex and unstructured decisions are hindered by a lack of clear understanding of various underlying assumptions and perspectives involved in the decision process. At present, little attention is paid to the elicitation of underlying assumptions and perspectives in dealing with complex issues in traditional decision support systems (DSS). We argue that the Socratic dialectic inquiry is a...
